Bio-operate - Knowledge development and transfer of best practice on bio-safety/bio-security/bio-risk management (Project n.25)

Description:

The project aims to strengthen the capacity of identification, management and mitigation of risks related to facilities that process biological agents, through the development of policies, transfer of good practices and the implementation of international standards. The countries involved are Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.

In particular, the project purposes and main activities are:

  1. Improve knowledge related to the risk assessment for the deliberate use of biological hazards.
  2. Establish, implement and maintain a bio-risk management system in accordance with the requirements of the Laboratory bio-risk management standard ISO 15190 CWA 15793. The scope of this laboratory bio-risk management system is to set requirements necessary to control risks associated with the handling or storage and disposal of biological agents and toxins in laboratories and facilities.
  3. Provide for and reinforce the sharing and transfer of best practices on biosafety/ bio-security management.
  4. Develop a sustainable training system applicable to the involved Countries and their government structures.
  5. Improve regional inter-agency cooperation and harmonize with international biosafety/bio-security standards.

The project is conducted together with the Università di Roma Tor Vergata as project leader, and with the Military Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (Poland).

 

The EU CBRN Risk Mitigation CoE Initiative is implemented jointly by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). Overall coordination of the Initiative is carried out by representatives from both the JRC and UNICRI in close cooperation with the European Commission’s Directorate General for Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid (DG DEVCO) acting as the Initiative's Decision Making Body and the European External Action Service (EEAS).
